2013 Oscar Dress Mess

February 25, 2013 § 9 Comments

Usually, the day after an award show I like to write about the pretty dresses.

Last night there were many, which everyone is writing about today.

i.e. Naomi and Jessica. Bow down now to the dress Gods!

I, on the other hand, have chosen to write about the messes of dresses; the design mistakes that walked the red carpet last night.

Melissa McCarthy in David Meister. I take no issue with the girl. I’m frustrated that first, the designer chose not to give her a proper foundation. Second, the drape the fabric was not done in a way to flatter her body. Draping is a very difficult technique. When done properly it can be so flattering. When done wrong it can look like a sack.

Anne Hathaway in Prada. I actually don’t think this is a bad dress (pretty color, column), but of course we have to talk about Les Nippleables.” I am fairly certain this dress was made from a cut pattern. Darts at the bust can often turn pointy if you aren’t careful, or they can be very intentional. I’m not sure Muiccia didn’t know that Annie’s nipples looked this way. She’s one smart cookie that Miuccia Prada. The back of the dress was stunning, but no one even mentioned this, as they’ve been stuck on stupid (what is it about boobs that make people so dumb?). Anyway, Anne has come out and apologized, saying that the Prada choice was a quick second choice. I’d be a little perturbed if I was Ms. P.

Nicole Kidman in L’Wren Scott. I will love Nicole always and forever since she fought off Billy Zane in all her sweet curly-haired sweetness in 1989s Dead Calm. I just loathe this dress and for as much as I can intellectualize my feelings about fashion, I can’t put my finger on this one.

Kristen Stewart in Naeem Khan. I didn’t watch the awards, but word has it that not only was the dress off, but so was the girl wearing it. The dress had potential, but the fit through the waist and bust is wrong. The cups are not molded to her bust at all, which makes them stand apart from her chest. I dislike that in a dress. I want to pull the thing up and nip in at the waist. Not a tough fix with help from a good seamstress.

M.

Did I miss any? Who did you love? Who needed help?

You forgot to mention Selma Hayak. She was a hot mess.

I know a lot of people really took issue with Salma, but I loved the dress. It’s typical that Alexander McQueen, or Sarah Burton in this case (who is the current head of design for McQueen) to have this kind of reaction. The dress is severe. But it fit her perfectly. The neckline seems to be (from the photos) to be unbelievable beadwork and applique.

I think what throws off the look might be the up do. I kind of wish her hair was in a low pony tail and more sleek.

Despite these dress messes, they are still being talked about – I guess that’s the point. But still – sometimes you have to wonder why such gorgeous women were styled that way…

My girlfriend Stacey siad my post bordered on mean girl territory. I tried to explain that fashion is about the dresses and the design and not about the women. I do think the designers and stylists should have been a little more thoughtful about the needs of their clients.

The fashion and styling business is tough. Everyone wants the job and I think a lot of the time they just want to get paid or want to use “that dress” or “get that star” and they don’t really care about the people or the art underneath.

Needless to say, I lasted three months in the “real” fashion world. I’m happier examining it from the outside. The dresses. Not the people.
Sort of an interesting side note… as I hit the picture arrow of all the women last night, at every single image Sophie said, “She looked pretty!” From the mouths of babes.

  • Those were some hot dress messes!! I kind of thought Salma was a hot mess too although I appreciated that she wasn’t all about the boob for once. I didn’t see Nicole’s whole dress until here and yes, something is off. Maybe it’s the swirls at the bottom. Not sure. I also thought Amanda Seyfried’s dress fit funny. It kept bunching up when she moved and come on, people move!

Really about Salma? I’m still thinking it’s just because of the severity/McQueen factor.
One time I wore a dress that was sequined all over like Nicole’s. It was heavy, and the same colors with the same swirls. I ditched my date that night. I don’t know…. just bad.
      Off to examine Seyfried.

I don’t pay much attention to the dresses, but I think Anne Hathaway looks concerningly thin, especially given her height. Yikes.

I heard her being interviewed for Les Mis and she acted like she knew getting so thin for the role was dangerous, but a part of me wondered if she didn’t sort of love it. She was the heroine of The Devil Wears Prada, after all,and that whole movie was about being thin enough to wear a size 4.

What’s this?
