Miami Marathon 2013

April 26, 2012 § 17 Comments

As soon as the girls were asleep I hopped online to check the New York City Marathon 2012 lottery results.

When it was clear that my New York hopes had been dashed I scooted over to Twitter to find lots of friends in the same boat.

Run to Munch wrote a great post about her own shattered dream. I saw it pop into my mailbox as I typed tweety responses to my new friends in the blogosphere.

The running community was busy. It was almost as exciting as the learning the lottery results themselves.

As if the clouds had lifted, the possibilities and choices opened up and the options became limitless.

I had figured I’d run the City of Oaks Marathon should I be Out of New York, but after seeing the hoopla surrounding NYC 2011 (and Boston, oh my) I knew that my next race needed to be bigger than little old Raleigh could provide for me.

Miami 2013 is far enough away that I have time to dream and train, run half marathons as practice, worry, hope and write!

It will be my first weekend away from the children who by then will have just turned five. Time to fly the coop I think. They will be fine, right?

Joanna is in. My great friend Sandra is strongly considering it. Who else? Who else!

I’m dreaming of crossing the finish line already!

Is there anything more exciting than a new dream?

The Loews Miami Beach Hotel. We stayed here when I ran the Miami 2010 Half Marathon. It's a gorgeous hotel!

Grace and Minnie by the pool.

Sophie beach running.

Recovering from my next marathon would be much more effective/productive/delicious happening here. To the right of the pool is an umbrella with my name on it! I also foresee a fruity cocktail and lunch brought on a tray!

I’m contemplating the Miami one as well now It looks like a nice retreat from the northeast winter. They sent me a discount code from the Boston expo that I think is good until May 4th or so.

“Enter BMXPO13, complete your registration and you will receive a $10 discount on the Half or Full Marathon.”

I’ve heard Miami is an incredible race & I hope to do it one day! This will be my first year running NYCM. I entered the lottery for 2 years & didnt get in. Then when I did through the NYRR 9+1 program, I injured myself during training and had to pull out. Now here I am again through 9+1 and am doing my best to stay injury free so I can finally run it. Don’t give up on NYCM… you’ll race it ne day!

You got in! You must be so excited! I lived in NYC during my early twenties, so running the marathon one day will happen! Will just keep signing up until it does!!!!

  • Ooh Miami sounds fun! I know a lot of runners are considering Walt Disneyworld in January 2013 too since its the 20th anniversary. I too was denied from NYC… but not surprised since they only let in like 1% of New Yorkers since we have guaranteed options… haha.

  • I just saw and read your marathon re-cap post (I know it was a while ago I’ve gotten so behind on reading blogs). Congratulations!! Also, Miami Marathon sounds really fun! Is it Spring 2013? I am still second guessing whether I am ready to do another one yet (I’ve done a half since finishing my full and had some knee soreness after). But maybe by 2013 my body will be more receptive to the idea.

I didn’t even enter the lottery for New York, but I kept watching Twitter to see if anyone got drawn. Miami does sound lovely, but I don’t know if this little desert dweller could handle running a marathon in the humidity!

  • Yay!! Can’t wait!!!! xxx

  • Miami does sound enticing. I think I see an umbrella with my name on it too! 🙂

  • Dan says:

I’ve run the miami half three times and love it to death. However, it’ll take a lot more guts to run the full, mostly because of the humidity. I can handle two hours of it in the morning, but leading into 10 AM? If you can handle it, then it’s a no-brainer because the course is gorgeous.

    Best of luck!

Any race in Florida sounds awesome!!

  • nadinefawell says:

Oh, that looks HORRIBLE. You poor thing, all that sun and swimming pool action…

  • Jane Fritz says:

Too bad about NYCM, but great plan B you’ve got figured out. Having an exciting destination run is a great motivator!

  • AmyC says:

Miami? Go for it! You’ll have a great time and be refreshed for kid time when you get back.
