Smoothies, Dead Fish, and Teamwork

Wonderful Wednesday has left me feeling great!

I’m not sure why I ever veer off from this kind of healthy eating (that I know is so good for me), but when time is not managed properly my diet is always the first to go down in flames. Weeks can go by and I start to feel sluggish. My jeans become tighter and I suck in my stomach extra hard and pose sideways as I pass mirrors. Standing face on reveals the lumpy truth. It’s always at that point when I get out the juicer and start again; such a disheartening cycle.

I drank my smoothie after this morning’s run and it felt like a good choice for recovery. On the way to grab the girls I toasted two pieces of Ezekiel bread with a tablespoon of peanut butter and some jelly. I was feeling the need for crunch so I took along an apple and a cup of lower fat tortilla chips and headed out the door. I know it’s bad to eat in the car, but when I’m on the go there is no other way.

The weather today was warm, so the moms met up at the playground to chit and chat. The kids played nicely and I realized how much I love the group of ladies that come to the lower playground under that big old tree.

Most of the pre-school moms meet up at the enclosed playground where they don’t have to watch their kids as closely. There’s always a flutter of activity up there, but my kids like the swirly thingy that they can wind down and the triple slides, so to the smaller lower playground we go. In a way, it feels a little like high school with all the cool girls up in the quad, while I hang out with the smokers and rebels behind the bleachers. None of the moms I hang out with are actual smokers or rebels, but I like that we are a little off from the bigger group. It’s always been how I roll.

To say I had the best time I’d had all week would be an understatement. I left after an hour of really amazing jibber jabber about boogers and baby weight, cancer and gallbladder removal, feeling happy. Really connected and happy. Isn’t that amazing? That booger talk and gall stone removal could inspire such a reaction in a person? I think it’s why mommy groups were created to begin with, though I wouldn’t know because I never joined one. I thought all mommy groups were created by those girls in the quad.

On the way home I talked my little gals into a little trip to Whole Foods. I reminded them that it’s not a super huge deal if the car cart is being used, so if it was gone we needed to act like four-year olds and not crying babies.

We ran through the doors and spotted the red one; the car with both wheels still in tact.

Like gold had been struck, we ran to it. They hopped in and we roamed around collecting more stuff for juicing and some fishies for dinner.

My kids have eaten fish since they were little. As a Mainer, it is my responsibility to feed them the gifts from the sea and generally they like what they’ve had.

When they saw a bunch of fish still attached to their heads and tails, they got out of the cart for a good look. They examined the fish and asked questions about how they ended up dead under glass. Were they real? Why were they different colors? It was like a spur of the moment Science lesson, right there in the fish department.

I felt proud when Sophie pointed to a crustacean tail and shouted out,” Look mom, lobster!”

Mainers know lobster.

I ended the day with a dinner of quinoa and a salmon burger with fresh avocado. Brian’s bean and veggie salad from last night was the perfect addition and I appreciated his thoughtful preparation. Sometimes we work pretty well as a team, though often it isn’t so obvious.

A piece of dark chocolate and I’m perfectly good and satisfied.

I made it through Wonderful Wednesday. Maybe I should have called it Wicked Wednesday in honor of that Maine lobster under the glass?

Today was wicked wicked good!

Wonderful Wednesday began with a glass of lemon water while listening to Pete’s Sumatra brewing in the machine. I’d forgotten that I’d planned to drink a smoothie for breakfast, so I measured out exactly one cup of Special K and another cup of milk (skim, of course).

After a disastrous attempt to get my girls to match their skirts to their shirts to their socks, I gave up and they got in the car looking like red-eyed rag-a–muffins. I dropped them off and headed home for a fairly quick three-mile run.

Much like my girls and their pre-school fashion drama, I’ve been kvetching a little about my own race day outfit. The CW-X pants are out, my beloved Dash tights have gotten a little too roomy in the legs and I must resist the urge to wear shorts with my “how I love thee” compression socks. The socks would be wonderful, but shorts would leave me with the seriously chafed thighs; a horrendous and rashy mess. I tried my Lululemon Inspire crops today, but they slide down too much. I may prefer a low waisted jean, but when it comes to my running pants the higher the better!

This weekend I have scheduled a call with my first marathoning hero and second Scibelli sister, Sandra. We are going to go over the list of things I need to take on race day and I’ve written out my array of questions, for which I need some help to answer.

For example, there are different theories about how one should pace their race. Some people feel you start slowly no matter what and speed up when the mileage gets higher. I tried this in training, but found that I was so tired later my overall speed was really terrible.

I also attempted a long run where I did a form of speed work; would run comfortably for a bit and then speed up for a certain distance before slowing down again. This seemed to leave me feeling pretty good and I was happy with my time, but it may not be the best strategy.

With twelve days to go I don’t have much more to do.

It’s a nice feeling to just have to focus on the day-to-day tasks, relax a bit, sleep more, and stay committed to eating clean.

Now I know why so many people told me to enjoy the taper. It’s really quite nice.

My Top 8 Favorite Bloggers

It turns out that one of the nicest pastimes for a mom at home with kids is blog surfing. It’s cheaper than Internet shopping and fills that lonely place inside that vies for adult conversation. I wished I’d discovered it sooner.

In honor of some of the fabulous bloggers who have inspired my own posts, made me laugh out loud, and sent words of encouragement based on things I’ve written, I decided I should list my favorites.

Here they are:

1. Acoursetothefinishline.wordpress.com Theresa writes about training for a marathon while working in education and struggling with infertility. We have a lot in common, since I myself survived the last two. It turns out that she is a bit ahead of me on the marathon training front (we both are using Hal Higdon’s Novice 2), so she’s been a real asset with tons of good advice! Also, I love love love her wit! As I continued to read and we began corresponding a bit, I’ve found that she is also a super girl. My first blogger friend! I think we should all send her positive sticky baby vibes…. she is ready and deserves one!

2.  Losingweightinthecity.com Theodora is one of the first bloggers whose posts I ever read. She had me hooked from the beginning with her story of initial weight loss while living in New York City to her running adventures, most recently with the New York Marathon. I love her writing and also live vicariously through her, since my own time as a young woman in NYC ended over 12 years ago. Scary how time flies!

3. Littlebittybakes.com Liz is adorable! A runner and a baker, she blogs about her life and her recipes. I love her pictures and her passion for what she does. For me, a true disaster in the kitchen, I feel like her recipes are do-able; not too hard for the average bear, like me. I am dying to make her Chai Spice Oatmeal Crispies. Also, could her URL be any cuter?

4. Monicarodgers.wordpress.com Monica is one of two bloggers (on the list) that I actually know in real life. We grew up together during our Summers in Maine, but I put her on my list because I love her voice, her writing, and her take on life. She is incredibly talented in so many areas, most especially as a mom, which is evident throughout her blog. Check out her car seat covers, her photography, her musings. She’s amazing!

5. Examiner.com/running-in-new-york/lora-johnson How could I not include Lora? She is the main reason my readership has gone up and writes her own terrific blog full of really great running information. A lot of her information is regarding area specific (Brooklyn) races, but she also has written some terrific pieces about helping women runners stay heathy and (one of my favorite topics) cool running gear.

6. Aliontherunblog.com Ali’s writing cracks me up. She is a runner who lives with Crohn’s disease and has raised money through Jack Rabbit Sports’ organization called Run For The Rabbit. She was chosen to represent them and her charity is the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America. One of my oldest/dearest/bestest friends in real life lives with Crohn’s, so I feel strongly about Ali’s cause. Plus, she sells adorable I Heart Sweat running shirts, with the proceed’s going toward the charity!

7. Cleaneatingchelsey.com Chelsey has the most positive and healthy relationship to food that I’ve found in a blog! As her URL proclaims, she eats clean, but her good habits were spurred by a corn/gluten/lactose intolerance. Despite it, though, I never get the feeling that changing her diet was/is a chore. She loves food and doesn’t eat stuff out of a box! One day I hope to be more like her. Until then I’ll keep reading her blog for motivation and hope that one day her philosophy might rub off onto me and my not so great eating habits.

8. Cafeganesh.com Jennifer is the second blogger that I actually know is a real person. She is a yoga teacher in Raleigh and a Lemondead (Lululemon girl to my non-Lulu obsessed readers). I have been lucky enough to attend two of Jennifer’s classes, but haven’t been to more, solely because this marathon training is a real time sucker. When I saw her last (at the store) she reminded me that I really should come back, and she is right. Until then, I’ll keep reading her blog which is filled with fantastic posts like Pull Your Head Out of Your Asana! She has a great voice; knowledgable about her work and hilarious, too.
